The Gift of Calm
Teaching and modeling composure fosters social-emotional and academic competence.
Adapting brain research information to situations that parents encounter daily, this seminar will introduce powerful techniques for adults to notice their own upset, refocus and gain control of themselves so they can be more effective teachers. Learn how to respond to upset children as well as specific ways to teach children to calm themselves using child-friendly props. Participants will make some of these props so they are ready to get started.
Finding Your “Big Voice”
Developing assertiveness will counter the dangers of common passive and/or aggressive reactions to conflict.
Our patterns of action, speech, and voice tone become the model for how children treat themselves and others for the rest of their lives. During fights or upset moments we tell children to “use your words”, often without teaching them the words to use. This seminar will demonstrate how to respond to conflict between children as well as clarify and encourage expected behaviors, foster healthy problem solving skills, and stop our unconscious support of the victim and bully syndrome. A make and take of language prompts (in both English and Spanish) will be offered.
You Have a Choice
Empowering Children While Staying in Charge
We can make a shift in our own behavior and language to help children be more likely to choose to follow our directions. Become conscious of the difference between commands and requests provides children with the respect that often results in cooperation. Learn the various types of oppositional behavior and appropriate interventions. Learn how to do a self-check for assertive voice tone and body language. Learn a five-step process for communicating and clarifying children’s choices within the structure of the classroom.
The Truth about Consequences
Consequences delivered with empathy allow children to learn responsibility for their choices. We all make mistakes and have made choices that led to painful outcomes. Punishment and rewards rely on judgment. Consequences rely on reflection. This seminar demonstrates that threat, lecture and punishment will distort the learning opportunity. How to teach commitments and agreements, and deliver effective consequences with consistency, calm clarity, and empathy, helping children reflect on their choices and motivate them to make changes in their behavior. A make and take of language prompts (in both English and Spanish) for adults will help participants bring home and use this approach immediately.
Opening Your “Presence”
Connection vs. Attention - the gift kids really want from those who care.
Today, with children having highly scheduled, and/or over-entertained lifestyles, parents spending less time in the home and families becoming smaller or restructured, there is a need to strengthen the bond between adults and children. This seminar will focus on the power of play and short, quality rituals that counter the stresses of these times, offering physical, social-emotional, and cognitive stimulation necessary to increase cooperation and motivation. Participants will receive instruction and playful practice of cooperative games and challenges as well as “I Love You® Rituals” they can offer their child, strengthening the foundation for mental and emotional health.
